What are risers when hanging a stair rail?
hello, I have to hang a stair rail on the wall leading to the basement and the inspector says it has to be more than 3 ft. above risers. What in the hell are risers?

- Risers are the vertical part of the stairs that form the space between each step.
- risers are simply your stairs, particularly the portion of the step that 'rises' Just keep the banister 36" higher than the height of the steps and you'll be fine. Basically, if you put the railing too low, it would make for awkward use.

- the back part of the step http://www.bestdecksite.com/introStairsPg1.htm http://www.woodweb.com/knowledge_base/Installation_Tips_for_Stair.html the bottom of my hand rail is indeed 36" from the up side of the stair tread.
